Recently I talked about recliner chairs and then mentioned riser recliner chairs. This type of chair is designed specifically with people with disabilities or long term illnesses or mobility problems in mind as unlike normal recliner chairs they can help you to stand up. Imagine the relief if you suffer with Arthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis and you have great difficulty with your joints that a riser recliner chair would give you. Less strain on your thighs hips and knees means less pain so an electric recliner chair with a riser action could be so beneficial. It is so easy to stand up by just pressing a button and the whole chair gently and quietly rise up until you are in a standing position and able to walk away, either on your own or with the help of a stick or walking frame but the whole process will be much easier and so pain free. Wonderful! There are so many different models to choose from in the riser recliner chairs now with choices of back cushions and different colour ways so many lovely fabrics and of course a lot of the riser recliner chairs can come in leather. Some of these use what is known as leather facing, that means the recliner chair has leather on the seat the back and the arms but the outside parts of the electric recliner are covered in what is called leather match, which is a PVC type of material that is the exact same colour as the leather. This is a very clever way of holding prices at sensible and affordable levels whilst not detracting from the look or wear of the riser recliner chair in your home. The normal riser recliner chairs are capable of lifting people weighing up to 20 stone whilst there are others that can move up to 38 stone whilst some bariatic chairs have the capability to lift 50 stone weights so there should always be a riser recliner chair available to you what ever size you are . All of these chairs come with a battery back up system so that if there is a power cut you can always return the chair to a normal position. Depending on your health it can be a very sensible idea to have a riser recliner chair rather than just a recliner chair.

Riser Recliner Chair or Recliner Chair which do you choose?
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010Recliner Chairs for comfort
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010The recliner chair is probably the most versatile item of furniture you could have, it allows you to sit in a formal upright positions that you can read or watch television or to put your feet up and relax. With the back fully reclined on your recliner chair you can almost use it to sleep in. There are now so many different types of recliner chairs to choose from starting with the plain and simple push back recliner chair, which does exactly as it says when you push against the back of the chair it reclines whilst at the same time the footrest is released and extends out to support your legs. The one real problem you face with that style of recliner chair is the fact that to get out of it you need to be able to push the footrest down with your legs which can be a problem for any one with a mobility problem or a disability of some sort. With that in mind you can move from there to the recliner chair which has either a release handle on the side or a release catch though again the chair with just the release catch can be problematical to get out of. So perhaps there is some reason to look at the ranges of swivel recliner chairs that come with a separate but matching footstool, this way you can put your feet up easily and relax and recline but not have the difficulties in getting up that can be encountered with the manual recliner chairs that have a built in footrest. An even better and more obvious way around the problems with getting out of a recliner chair is to choose an electric recliner plug it into the nearest mains socket and hey presto all the problems disappear, with the electric recliner chair there is normally a choice of one or two motors. The single motor versions give you less control as the back and the footrest operate in conjunction with each other so if you decide to put your feet up then the back of the recliner chair will also move which can be frustrating if you want to watch television with your feet up. If you take the two motor option then you can choose to have your feet up but still have the back of the recliner chair in an upright position, much better for watching TV or reading. The vast majority of electric recliner chairs come with a built in battery back up system so if by any slight chance you are fully reclined and the power goes off there will be enough power in the 9 volt battery system on your electric recliner to get you back to a sitting position, that is providing you check occasionally to make sure the battery is still functioning. Recliner chairs can give you a great deal of comfort and of course there riser recliner chairs for those people with an illness, disability or with mobility problems but I will tell you all about those next time, meanwhile use your recliner chairs for comfort
Electric Adjustable Beds can help so much.
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010If you have mobility problems or a disability of some sort then an electric bed can be a real help. If however you are really restricted in your movements and ability to get yourself in and out of bed then it may well be worth looking at not just an adjustable bed but at a profiling bed which can lift the whole person up to a position where it is possible for a carer or partner to be able to nurse you more easily. This type of adjustable bed is normally found in hospitals but is also available for use at home, obviously it can be used like a normal electric bed with adjustments for the head feet and and knee areas but it also offers so much more with motors that are capable of lifting body weights in excess of 18 stones. The motors are so quiet that you will hardly know that you are moving and with different motors for the different actions so if you just want to raise your head as you are in your adjustable bed to read or watch television then one set of motors will do that for you whilst if your carer needs you lifting up to a position where they can attend to you that is just so easy. As you will spend more time in this sort of adjustable bed you will find that the mattress is normally a reflex foam which is so helpful for the body of a person spending long hours or even days and weeks or months in an electric bed as it is using the very latest in advanced polymer technology which whilst being durable and long lasting is also helpful in preventing ‘bed sores’ that can be experienced when spending long periods incapacitated. This could be such a helpful addition to the house of any person who is suffering from long term illness or disability and because of the legislation it is possible to purchase your electric bed with out VAT which can be a real saving. Electric adjustable beds can help so much
Now you can use your Recliner chair to relax
Monday, June 28th, 2010Well it is all over for the England team and they are probably on their way home now,but at least we will all be able to sit back and relax in our recliner chairs and enjoy some sensible programmes on TV and not be left sitting on the edge of our recliner chair getting excited in case they ( England ) managed to get across the half way line. It has been amazing for me to look at the whole world cup scenario over the last few weeks, both ITV and BBC have had huge teams of technicians, engineers, commentators and so called experts out it South Africa at great expense and for what? To report on a team that was lucky to get past the first round and into the knock out stages and didn’t they get knocked out! You wonder just how the FA can justify paying these people such vast amounts of money to play for their country when most of them didn’t even seem as though they were playing! Where was the pride and the passion but then if you have a team manager from another country being paid some astronomical sum how can he build passion into a team of no hoper’s like them! All those people out there in one form or another who will have to come home now at least when they get back they will be able to put their feet up and relax in their recliner chairs wont they? I am pleased though for the England players because it does mean that they will be able to have a rest and a nice holiday before they start playing again, after all they work so hard week in and week out training and playing, training anything up to half of every day and then some times having to play twice a week and all for £15-00 a week or was that the sort of sum that was paid to their predecessors’ who did at least have passion and pride. This world cup like the players was over hyped over rated and over blown perhaps now the television companies will relegate the football matches to BBC 3 or 4 or ITV 2, 3 or 4 and let the other programmes get back to normal and then we can all relax in our recliner chair.
Adjustable beds for a better nights sleep.
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010Sleeping is so important to us and an adjustable bed can be a real help but have you ever thought about how you sleep and whether what you do before going to bed is the right or wrong sort of thing? for instance it is recommended in an article I read recently that you make sure that your bed and bedroom are quiet and comfortable for sleeping, I’m not really certain how you keep the bed quiet, but I understand what they are getting at. If you set the right atmosphere then you will create a better nights sleep. It is better to have the room cooler and then use your blankets or duvet on your bed as a means to keep warm. If you want to get a good nights sleep in your bed you should also make sure your curtains don’t let any light in as the early morning light filtering in could disturb your sleep pattern. Once in the bedroom your adjustable bed will help you find the right and most comfortable position for you and if you want to sit up and read or watch television then it is so much easier with an electric bed. For those of us who suffer with a disability or mobility problems then being able to adjust the bed at the touch of a button is a real bonus, imagine if you have circulation problems and need to raise your ankles with a normal be it is a matter of stuffing pillows under your ankles or legs or getting someone to do it for you, then the first time you move they slip out from underneath you and you need to start again where as with an electric bed it is just a slight touch to one of the buttons and suddenly and quietly your ankles are moved, sheer bliss! If you have a problem with a hiatus hernia or acid reflux then the possibility of being able to sit up in bed to sleep without loads of pillows is just such a relief. the same thing will apply to those people who have heart or blood pressure problems being able to adjust your position in bed is a great help. If you are a heavy snorer or suffer with sleep apnoea then being able to sleep in different positions on you adjustable bed could benefit your partner as well as you. So you can see an adjustable bed can be a really useful part of making sure you get a really good nights sleep and as an added bonus if you have a disability problem or a long term illness or you buy your adjustable bed exempt from VAT , you will need to fill a VAT emption form at the time of purchase but if you are buying a bed that costs £500 then you would be saving £87-50 at present and £100 when the new rates come in to force next year. Well worth having! However what ever your condition an adjustable bed can help to a better nights sleep.
Recliner Chairs for the world cup
Tuesday, June 15th, 2010Is it me or has football taken over the world, I sat in my recliner chair the other day and just looked at the television programmes before deciding what I wanted to watch and the choice seemed to be football or football or even football but then I checked again and I was wrong so I pressed the button on my recliner chair and let my self relax then suddenly saw that there was more than football there was Tennis and grand prix motor racing its wonderful isn’t all this sport everywhere! I sat there in my chair and looked through the entertainment on offer and realised that both BBC and ITV had on their main channels changed the programming for the next few weeks to accommodate the World Cup now I like football and I have watched from the stands from the touch line from my riser recliner chair over the years but I do think we have a case of over exposure here don’t you? Both BBC and ITV have alternative channels BBC has channels 3 & 4 which don’t normally open until 7 pm in the evening and ITV has ITV 3 ITV4 and wouldn’t be better if the football was spread out across those channels not just put on to the main programme channels which then means that lots of people who do not like football at all suddenly either loose the programme they would have normally watched or those programmes are rescheduled. Why should people all across the UK sit down in their favourite recliner chair only to find the favourite programme has been replaced by football and it isn’t even as if you were watching your own team today New Zealand against well who knows and if you happen to be Welsh or Scottish or even from Northern Ireland why would you be interested any way they havent got a team there have they but they are forced to watch any team that the BBC or ITV decide they should watch and why oh why would they want to watch England in any of those countries unless it is to see them get beaten. Then of course ITV managed to drop the boob of all time by cutting to adverts as England scored their only game of the night, only on the HD channel though it must have had thousands of people jumping up and down in their recliner chairs. Then I sat and pondered more in my lovely comfortable recliner chair and probably managed to make my blood pressure rise to the same sort of height as a riser recliner chair when I discovered how much the BBC had paid for special studios in South Africa just for the world cup and how much Adrian Chiles is being allegedly paid as ITV’s new front man, it is good job that the BBC has unlimited funds and that ITV as a company hasn’t lost lots of money over the last few years otherwise people might start complaining mightn’t they! It is a good job they have so much money to throw around if they had been mores sensible and not shown the world cup that money they have spent could have gone to help the government balance the books or could have bought every disabled or mobility restricted person in the country a riser recliner chair! A much better idea!
Wheelchairs and Accessibility
Sunday, June 13th, 2010When you have a disability or mobility problem and you want to go somewhere for a day out then choosing the right place can be difficult. However I was happy when I recently saw an advert for a new revised edition of The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain , it contains so much useful information and if you are, like me, a blue badge holder then its absolutely free! Fantastic! Once my copy came I found it enthralling, so much information clearly shown and so descriptive. With easy recognisable symbols to show which places will allow wheelchair access or powered scooters or whether rest seats are available for those with mobility impairments rather than those confined to a power chair or wheel chair . It is a fantastic book that you really should obtain it gives you details of attractions you can visit in every part of Britain, I have never yet been to the north east of England for a break of any sort I did go up to the area many years ago when I working and before I had my mobility problems. Having now studied the rough guide in great detail I am planning a trip up there and I want to go to the National Railway Museum at Shildon in County Durham and having read about it I know just facilities they have. There are so many places to visit in the North East and I think I am going to need have more than one visit up there, but then the details in the book show me just how many places I can visit with my wheelchair much more easily than I ever thought was possible. It covers Northern Ireland and Scotland and Wales, well lets be sensible it is called the Rough Guide to accessible Britain so it should, but it is so informative about places that you can really plan your trip with confidence knowing that your problems will be catered for if you choose the right place with the aid of this wonderful guide. I urge you to send for your free copy of this book and I hope it brings you as much enjoyment and information as it has for me. I realise now that my wheelchair has got a lot of miles to do!
Mobility Scooters!
Tuesday, June 8th, 2010Now is the time for mobility scooters to really come in to there own! I listened to Mr Cameron today setting out the problems the new coalition government has inherited from the previous lot and it doesn’t sound good does it. It now seems certain that taxes are going to have to rise to cover the costs we have incurred in the past the one thing that I don’t think they will be brave enough to do though is to put Vehicle Excise Duty, road tax in other words on mobility scooters power chairs or electric wheelchairs but you can bet that fuel costs will rise in the form of petrol and diesel so using your mobility scooter to get around will not only be safer it will be more economical. It will also be easier to ride on the road with those mobility scooters that can go at speeds of up to 8 mph per hour and come in the group 3 classification of mobility scooters as with the ever rising cost of fuel there will presumably be less other vehicles on the road. however beware when riding a smaller less speedy mobility scooter which you can only use on the pavements as there will probably be more pedestrians walking around with their heads down under the burden and pressure of helping out with the mountain of debt we have been left with. So if you are kind and feel sympathy towards these persons now having to walk with their shopping rather than just piling it all in the car then offer to carry some of their parcels for them as you ride along on your mobility scooter. If you don’t feel kind you might see the come cost rises as an opportunity you could be riding round town on your mobility scooter collecting parcels of shopping for people not used to having to carry them and charge them for the help you give them turn your mobility scooter into a little earner! All sorts of tax rises and cut backs are being talked about in trying to foresee the new chancellors emergency budget. I saw a report that suggested the IMF (the international monetary fund) wants him to include VAT on to things like food and children’s clothing as well as bring the tax (VAT) on domestic fuel up to one standard rate. These moves could be so costly for families at both ends of the age scales. Those young families with growing children will have to consume less food if the VAT is included on and buy less clothes the old geezers like me at the other end of the spectrum will probably not worry too much about the tax on children’s clothes unless you are very small or have lots of grandchildren but VAT on food and extra costs on heating and lighting could turn out to be a killer for old folks it is a very delicate tight rope that the new chancellor and his advisor’s will have to walk lets hope for all our sakes they get it right but it is going to be a long long time before we turn the corner and I don’t envy those people who are in charge now by the time they get through this they will all be riding in mobility scooters. Perhaps Mr Cameron could suggest all his Ministers and civil servants are supplied with mobility scooters instead of luxury cars. As I come to the end of this blog can I leave you with one last question if the situation is really so bad and that Mr Brown was either Chancellor of the Exchequer or Prime Minister for all of the time that the Labour Party were actually in power is he not then responsible in some way and ought he not be made to answer, together with that nice Mr Darling, to Parliament and the British people as to just why we are in this situation!! Where is he by the way he is still an elected MP and presumably being paid as one is he going to the house of commons on a daily basis to serve his own constituents and the country generally or has he borrowed some ones mobility scooter to see just how far away he can get before we all realise that the letter one of his ex ministers left in his office saying the money has all gone wasn’t actually a joke after all. so if you see him out and about on his mobility scooter just ask him what went wrong, but then as he rides off on his mobility scooter he will probably say in to his microphone that you are just another bigot. Ah well Mr Brown happy retirement lets hope we can afford a mobility scooter when we need one!
Electric Chairs Electric Beds & The World Cup.
Monday, June 7th, 2010Here we go the World cup starts this week and the television is going to be saturated with 24 hours of football every day, well that is what it will feel like if you don’t like Football. So now is the time to make sure your electric bed is working and that you are comfortable because you might need to spend a lot of time in there whilst this football feast is played out. What do you do, turn the television off and sulk in the lounge or head to the bedroom out of the way and hope you can sit up in your adjustable bed and find some thing else to watch on another channel or get your self a decent book to read. At least with an electric bed it is easy to get yourself comfortable just press the button on the hand control set and you can raise the back of the bed to the sort of position you want to be in whether it is to sit up and read or to watch the television or even to do some knitting for lots of people it will be a chance to do anything other than watch football, still you will have the comfort of your electric bed if nothing else! On the other hand if you are a football fan then what a treat you have in store for you and it is sensible to make sure your electric riser recliner chair is in the right position so that you can enjoy all the games, you will need to check the times of matches so that if the sun is shining outside it doesn’t effect the picture on the screen otherwise you might finish up having to move your recliner chair whilst the match is on and you know that just as you get up to do that some one will score a goal! Before each match starts make sure your electric recliner is in the right position with your feet raised to the most comfortable setting and that your drinks whether it is tea coffee cola or the sensible glass of beer is in the right place so you don’t have to stretch too far after all you don’t want to pull a muscle by over stretching do you? Whatever you taste in sport and television you will not be able to get away from football live on the’box’ for the next few weeks and then when it is all over there will be lots of different programs to go over the highlights for weeks to come and then guess what there is Wimbledon to follow and the golf from St Andrews plus all the cricket so as I suggested earlier if you don’t lie sport be it football, tennis’ golf or cricket now is the time to take to your electric bed or if you can’t do that then turn your electric recliner chair around so it is facing away from the television. Of course you could just go out and spend time in the garden the sun is bound to shine whilst all this sport is on the television, get and extension lead and put your electric recliner chair outside and get a nice tan! Have a happy summer.
Electric Beds.
Saturday, June 5th, 2010Electric beds can make your sleeping so much more comfortable. if you are disabled or have mobility problems or even a long term illness then an electrically adjustable bed is almost a ‘must have’ product. Those off us who struggle with arthritis know the problems of trying to get a nights sleep, getting comfortable in the first place is difficult but then as the pressure of laying in one position for any length of time your sleep gets disturbed you get restless and the pain increases. However if you have an electric bed you can move your body at the touch of a button either raising your ankles or moving your knees or lifting your back up these gentle changes help to reduce the pain and the pressure, promoting a healthier more restful sleep. Most electric beds offer choices of size and also mattress style from conventional open coil spring units through to pocket sprung mattresses as well as memory foam mattresses or even combinations of both foam and spring units. It is important to get a good mattress for whilst an electrically adjustable bed can help to move you and relieve pressure a poor quality mattress can undo all the good you have done so far. Do you want a single version of your electric bed or do you want two singles linked together so that both partners, if there are two of you, can be independent. after all one of you might want to be sitting up whilst the other is laying flat. Though you can always get electric beds in a double size which are just one unit but then when you are up you are up and when you are down your down as the ‘Grand old duke of York’ would say, so if you can it is always best to have your own set with your own controls that way there is no arguing. The beauty of these electric beds is that it does not matter whether you are left or right handed the control unit is fitted so it can be used on either side. Persons who suffer from sleep apnoea or heavy snoring will also find an electric adjustable bed very helpful as it will allow them to sleep in a more up right position and so relieve the pressure on the airways and possibly reduce the actual snoring though if you are one of those unfortunate people who struggle with the more severe forms of sleep apnoea then you will probable need to wear a mask connected to an oxygen supply machine at night to alleviate the pressure caused on your heart and possibly your brain. The beauty is that nowadays the electric bed does not need to look like some thing out of a hospital they are lovely items of furniture which offer comfort and relaxation you would only have dreamed of up until now. So the answer to a good nights sleep is to get yourself set up with an electrically adjustable bed. Sleep well and wake relaxed. Good night.
