Sleep Well Feel Better

It is so important that we sleep well, this more than most things in life can refresh us and let us wake feeling good for the day ahead, but most of us take for  granted the mattress we sleep on , how much do we know about mattresses, where do they come from, who invented them how many different types are there and which one is right for you? The first mattresses really go right back to early mankind when ancient man used leaves and grass to raise him or herself off the ground to avoid draughts and insects, the Persians then used  goat skins filled with water before the Romans started to use bags of cloth stuffed with reeds or hay and the more wealthy Roman citizens used feathers as their filling, the filling the first actual ‘feather bed’.  By the 16th and 17th centuries mattresses were stuffed with straw or down and then placed on to timber frame with either rope or leather lattice work supports. The real progress with mattresses manufacturing came in the second half of the 20th century when spring interior units became so readily available, but even then there are so many different variations and types it is difficult to know how to choose what is right for you. Should you have an open coil spring  unit  a pocket spring unit a continuous link spring unit, it does rather depend on who is using it, but the one thing with all spring units manufactured is that they need care and attention , all mattresses  should be rotated once a month from when you take delivery and if it is a double sided mattress it should be ‘flipped’ over every other month. If you do  this you will get7 to 10 good years sleep and comfort from your mattress, unfortunately most people keep them far longer than that and towards the end of the life of the mattress they start to experience  bad nights and  possibly back ache, the secret? Change you mattress more regularly and you will sleep  better. During the 1970′s NASA invented a material that became known as memory foam. This was then developed for the medical field by one company but eventually reached the general market, memory foam mattresses are the biggest advancement in the world of sleep, in my opinion, since the Romans started to use feathers! Not only will a memory foam mattress last you anywhere between 10 and 20 years it wont need ‘flipping’ like a spring interior mattress does. They are also known as ‘pressure relief mattresses’ as the foam reacts to the body weight and temperature and spreads the load accordingly, because of this memory foam mattresses are also used extensively in hospitals for people who are needing long term bed rest the  mattress helps to prevent ‘bed sores’ If you are about to purchase a new mattress then you should really consider a memory foam one. If you have an electric adjustable bed you can also use a memory foam mattress on that and it will work well with the action. I am certain with a new mattress you will Sleep Well and Feel Better. Sleep tight.
