Sleep hygiene I hear you ask, has this little guy lost his marbles? Well no actually I haven’t it is apparently the term used to describe good sleep habits, it not just a matter of jumping in and pulling the duvet or sheets and blankets up, oh dear no there is far more to it than that. Obviously you need a mattress that is in good condition and to that end I would always recommend a memory foam mattress like all furniture it pays to buy the best and memory foam mattresses can really be beneficial to anyone. Let me give you some thoughts and ideas though about this sleep hygiene idea firstly try to get regular you can train your body to sleep well by going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time every day even when your on holiday or on your day off, the regular rhythm this creates will help you to sleep much better. If for any reason you can’t get off to sleep and you’ve been there for20 minutes or more then get up go and do some thing calming or boring until you feel sleepy and then return to bed and try again. Please though, if your partner is asleep, don’t switch the lights on and say some thing daft like”I can’t sleep can you?” it is likely to lead to lots of problems and a very cold shoulder! Try not to drink anything containing caffeine before you go to bed so avoid coffee tea or any cola type drinks don’t nibble on any chocolate and keep off the cigarettes as they are all stimulant’s and will stop you from sleeping properly. If you want to drink any alcohol then do it in the early evening or late afternoon giving yourself about 4 to 6 hours clear before you go to bed. If you take a bath at night then do it 1 to 2 hours before going to bed whilst it can be useful if you have a hot bath it can raise your body temperature and as it drops over the period before you go to bed it will help to relax you ready for sleep. Try not to read in bed keep that area of your life for sex and sleeping avoid television in the room as well it won’t relax you properly and might make your sleep more fitful and give you active dreams that could disturb your night or your partner. If you are either suffering from a disability or long term illness and you use an electric adjustable bed then make sure you are in a position that’s really comfortable for you before you drop off to sleep. All in all sleep hygiene can help you with a good nights sleep follow the ideas and you will feel so much better. Sleep well
