Have you ever been riding, or is it driving, I’m never sure, your mobility scooter and felt as though you were invisible? I know I have, it’s worse isn’t it when you are in a crowded area all those people about and all of them towering above you and none of them seems to have time to allow you through it can be so disconcerting, there are always pressure groups calling out for ‘cycle tracks’ ‘baby and parent parking’ why isn’t there a move for disabled and mobility scooter pathways to enable those of us in wheelchairs or power chairs to drive or ride safely in pedestrian areas. Unless you have been sat down there yourself it is impossible for you know how intimidating it can feel, imagine being at waist height to most others it is okay if there aren’t too many people about but in crowds it is almost claustrophobic. I suppose the problem is that most pavements aren’t wide enough to accommodate the extra amount of room that would be required but it is a growing problem as more and more of us require the freedom that we can get from our electric wheelchairs whether they be mini scooters, power chairs or mobility scooters or just wheel chairs. It isn’t a difficult choice be stuck at home confined to a recliner chair or have the ability to get out and about, but once you are thee you do need to feel comfortable don’t yo. Those of us who have the full road going mobility scooters that are capable of travelling at up to 8 miles an hour experience even more difficulties because of other road users, unfortunately at tie you are not seen because of being low down but when you are you don’t seem to get the same sort of courtesy that is extended to other vehicles. More reason for proper mobility traffic lanes. It is alright saying that you can travel on the roads and that you need insurance and a tax disc from the DVLA, at least it is free though, but if you don’t feel safe on the road then it is back to riding on the pavement and all the restrictions that come with it. Whilst there is a lot of help out there for us all to find it does seem as though there isn’t a concerted pressure group that can help with the comfort and well being of mobility scooter and wheel chair users, perhaps some of the MPs who will shortly be standing for Parliaments should be asked for their views and help it would make a sensible change from all the back biting and squabbling that we all know we are going to have to put up with during the election. Or even better a new party to represent all of those people in the UK with disabilities and mobility problems, certainly better than the BNP don’t you think?
