How are your summer holidays is it easier to get about in your new wheelchair?

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Well here we are on the way through summer and though it seemed to start well in April, May and June July and August haven’t bee as good as we would like have they but it doesn’t  have to stop you getting out and about. What you need is the right wheelchair mobility scooter or power chair and off you go. The world can be yours, well not literally, but at  least you can plan where to go in this wonderful summer season so many places that will now be able to accommodate your wheelchair so easily so that you can propel yourself around with that wonderful feeling of independence. So many  country homes or National Trust sites now have access for disabled and mobility restricted people so that now you too  can enjoy days out that a few years ago would not have been open to you. As well as that you can always plan and enjoy days out at the seaside providing you plan sensible and choose where you are going to go, resorts that are built around hilly areas are perhaps not the most sensible place to go and try and drive your mobility scooter as you may find that you haven’t got the power to climb steep hills or if you manage to get up you may drain the battery and then be very restricted as to what you can do. If however you choose a resort such as Llandudno which is so lovely with the main town being flat and easy to get around but  is still surrounded by beautiful country side but here in this wonderful seaside town you will be able to relax and know that your power chair will get you anywhere you want to go, even to the far end of the pier whether you are driving yourself or your carer or partner is taking charge and the beauty is when you get there you can choose from the bar or cafe to recharge yourself before you start back. The way things are going you will soon be able to do something in  the area you probably never thought possible there are moves afoot to tarmac a pathway up Snowdon to allow disabled people to climb to the summit but beware if you  do decide to go up this route make sure you have the right clothing with you as the weather can close in very quickly and you dont want to get caught half way up or down with a T shirt and shorts it could be very dangerous. Enjoy yourself this summer make sure you get out and about as you want to but plan ahead and make sure your equipment is working properly

What do you want from your recliner chair.

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

When you get yourself a recliner chair do you want a manual one on which you will find either a release catch or handle and that you can recline by pushing on the back, the disadvantage is that you then have to use both your legs and possibly one hand on the handle to push the leg rest down afterwards. Or do you want to go with an electric version of recliner chair which can make  life so much easier. There is now such a wide range of electric recliner chairs with different  manufacturers different covers and sizes and now ranges covered in PVC, leather match, bonded leather, full aniline leather as well as combinations of Leather and leather match. In this instance the main body of the chair and the arms are all covered in full leather whilst the outside is covered in leather match, a substitute for leather which is coloured to exactly the same shade but is less expensive and so enables the price to be more competitive without detracting form the wear ability of the chair itself. With the electric recliner chairs you can normally choose either a single or dual motor chair, the more sophisticated dual motor chair is, obviously, more expensive as it has two motors but it does mean that the back and  the leg rest can be used interdependently of each other.   Of course not every one want’s to have some thing plugged in then it can be sensible as an alternative to look at the ranges of swivel recliner chairs which are available. These come with different sizes colours and bases but the real beauty is the fact that you can turn around a complete circle and so survey the whole room, great if you have a lot of guests and want to be able to talk to them all. You don’t have to use the stool but when time comes to relax it is so comfortable to be able to put your feet up and use the full benefits of these swivel recliner chairs and stools and you will find that they are so competitively priced. If however you have any physical problems, disability’s or even long term illness it  may well be better to go for an electric riser recliner chair not only can you recline easily, just press the button, but you can also go  from a sitting to standing position without any effort on your part and imagine just how much less stress there will be on your joints under those circumstances. The other beauty is that you can obviously reverse the situation and take your self from standing to sitting and then on to a reclined position without any effort on your part. Making life so much easier and because these riser recliner chairs are designed specifically for persons with a  long term illness, a disability or mobility problems the HMRC section of the government allows you to purchase them without VAT if you fit their criteria and fill in the VAT exemption form. So decide what you want from your recliner chair and buy the right one for you.

Now you can use your Recliner chair to relax

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Well it is all over for the England team and they are probably on their way home now,but at least we will all be able to sit back and relax in our recliner chairs and enjoy some sensible programmes on TV and not be left sitting on the edge of our recliner chair getting excited in case they ( England ) managed to get across the half way line. It has been amazing for me to look at the whole world cup scenario over the  last few weeks, both ITV and BBC have had huge teams of technicians, engineers, commentators and so called experts out it South Africa at great expense and for what? To report on a team that was lucky to get past the first round and into the knock out stages and didn’t they get knocked out!  You wonder just how the FA can justify paying these people such vast amounts of money to play for their country when most of them didn’t even seem as though they were playing! Where was the pride and the passion but then if you have a team manager from another country being paid some astronomical sum how can he  build passion into a team of no hoper’s like them! All those people out there in one form  or another who will have to come home now at  least when they get back they will be able to put their feet up and relax in their recliner chairs wont they? I am pleased though for the England players because it does mean that they will be able to have a rest and a  nice holiday before they start playing again, after all they work so hard week in and week out training and playing, training anything up to half of every day and then some times having to play twice a week and all for £15-00 a week or was that the sort of sum that was paid to their predecessors’ who did at least have passion and pride. This world cup like the players was over hyped over rated and over blown perhaps now the television companies will relegate the football matches to BBC 3 or 4 or ITV 2, 3 or 4 and  let the other programmes get back to normal and then we can all relax in our recliner chair.

Adjustable beds for the disabled.

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

For those of us with a disability or mobility problem then an adjustable bed can such a benefit.  Just think how difficult it is for you to move about in bed trying to sit up or change the position in which you are laying, if you are disabled or have mobility problems then it is virtually impossible with out some one to help you. But once you have an adjustable bed life becomes so much easier no need at all for pillows to prop you up when you want to sit up to read or watch television just touch the button on the handset and you can raise the head end of your bed to a position in which you are comfortable this will enable you to sit up and read or watch television or drink that very welcome cup of tea. If you suffer with arthritis or rheumatism the advantage of being able to move without putting pressure on your joints is tremendous and if you do suffer from this sort of problem then it would be sensible to look at the possibility of your adjustable bed having a memory foam mattress. This type of mattress comes from work done in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s by  NASA in the space race when they needed to protect the astronauts against the pull of the ‘G’ force during lift off. They found that it helped to spread the weight across the area and so reduce pressure on the body, this information was eventually taken up and used in the medical profession for patients with severe and long term  problems. Eventually like all good  products it was taken up by manufacturers world wide for use in the home market. Memory foam mattresses can be so very comfortable especially if you have real problems with your hips, knees, back shoulders or ankles. It can relieve the pressure and so help you sleep more easily. Of course there are all sorts of different mattresses available which can offer you different comfort levels. Adjustable beds for disabled people can come in many different styles and types from single sets for just one person to king size sets with separate sides and controls so if one partner wants to sleep sitting up the other person can still lie down. It is also possible now to have more decorative adjustable beds including ones with metal frames or models with leather frames to them. Some of the adjustable beds available for disabled people can also have drawers in them so giving you extra storage space. It is possible to have massage units fitted to a lot of the adjustable beds now available as well as matching headboards. If you are having your adjustable bed for a disabled person then it is possible to purchase it under a scheme available through the government without VAT, this scheme is for people with disabilities or serious long term illness or mobility restricting problems and details can be found through the various websites that the government run. You must  remember though that this scheme applies to the person with the  problem and so if you are buying two beds to link together as a 4’6″ 5’0″ or 6’0″ that technically only the part for the disabled person should be VAT exempt and it is up to you to sign the legal exemption form. However you will find that the adjustable bed will make your sleeping so much better and if you sleep well you will feel well.  Adjustable beds for disabled people just make so much sense!  Sleep well!

Make the most of mobility scooters

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

As I walked down the main road in town the  other day coming towards me were two people on mobility scooters being nosey by nature I watched their progress and it was obvious that they were a couple, they way they talked and the fact that the lady was telling the gentleman what to do and where she wanted him to go, by that I mean which shops she wanted to go into. I approached them and asked how long they had been mobility scooter users. Once we got talking they explained that it was his second scooter and her first she had been looking after him for several years but had got to the stage where she could no longer keep up with him her walking as he rode his scooter and so she decided to get one of her own and suddenly their life was so much better. Not only could she now  keep in touch with him but she wasn’t tired any more so shopping was so much easier for them both. He laughed as he told me that she had  no ‘road sense’ and that he was always worrying she was  going to ‘mow’ some poor pedestrian down. They looked so happy together, both I think in their 80′s, but now once again able to do things together. Life isn’t always that good though that every one can afford a mobility scooter each as a couple but it was so good to see them. There are so many people about now of all ages who need disability scooters not just the elderly and the real beauty is the quality and choice available. Those scooters that can reach speeds of 8mph are also allowed to ride on the roads as well as the pavements but if you are going to use them in this situation you must make sure that they are registered with the DVLA who will issue you, free of charge, with  a disabled tax disc.  It is also  very sensible to insure your mobility for public liability for accidents or theft all the normal sort of things that you might come across in life generally. It is surprising how many specialist insurance companies there are about for such situations and prices are so competitive nowadays. Disability does not now  mean you are confined to your own home make the most of mobility scooters and  like the couple i met in town allow your self to get out and about
